Pour\u00adtant, sans ses travaux, la d\u00e9cou\u00adverte de la struc\u00adture de l\u2019ADN n\u2019aurait sans doute pas eu lieu aus\u00adsi rapi\u00adde\u00adment. Por\u00adtrait d\u2019une pio\u00adnni\u00e8re, sym\u00adbole de la per\u00ads\u00e9v\u00e9rance f\u00e9mi\u00adnine dans un monde sci\u00aden\u00adtifique dom\u00adin\u00e9 par les hommes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Les d\u00e9buts d\u2019une voca\u00adtion sci\u00aden\u00adtifique<\/strong><br>N\u00e9e \u00e0 Lon\u00addres en 1920, Ros\u00adalind Franklin grandit dans une famille cul\u00adtiv\u00e9e qui val\u00adorise l\u2019\u00e9ducation. Tr\u00e8s t\u00f4t, elle se pas\u00adsionne pour les math\u00ad\u00e9\u00adma\u00adtiques et la physique. Apr\u00e8s des \u00e9tudes bril\u00adlantes \u00e0 l\u2019universit\u00e9 de Cam\u00adbridge, elle s\u2019oriente vers la recherche en chimie physique, un domaine alors tr\u00e8s mas\u00adculin. De retour \u00e0 Lon\u00addres, elle rejoint le King\u2019s Col\u00adlege, o\u00f9 elle se voit con\u00adfi\u00ader l\u2019\u00e9tude de l\u2019ADN, la mol\u00e9cule por\u00adteuse de l\u2019information g\u00e9n\u00e9\u00adtique.<br>Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 sa ma\u00eetrise de la cristal\u00adlo\u00adgra\u00adphie, Franklin parvient \u00e0 obtenir des clich\u00e9s d\u2019une pr\u00e9\u00adci\u00adsion in\u00e9dite. La fameuse \u201cPho\u00adto 51\u201d, prise en 1952, r\u00e9v\u00e8le la struc\u00adture h\u00e9li\u00adco\u00ef\u00addale de l\u2019ADN. Ce clich\u00e9 devien\u00addra la cl\u00e9 de vo\u00fbte de la d\u00e9cou\u00adverte de la dou\u00adble h\u00e9lice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>L\u2019ombre de la recon\u00adnais\u00adsance : l\u2019affaire Wat\u00adson, Crick et Wilkins<\/strong><br>Si la \u201cPho\u00adto 51\u201d est d\u00e9ci\u00adsive, Ros\u00adalind Franklin ne sera pas asso\u00adci\u00e9e \u00e0 la pub\u00adli\u00adca\u00adtion de la d\u00e9cou\u00adverte de la struc\u00adture de l\u2019ADN. Sans son con\u00adsen\u00adte\u00adment, Mau\u00adrice Wilkins, son col\u00adl\u00e8gue, mon\u00adtre la pho\u00adto \u00e0 James Wat\u00adson et Fran\u00adcis Crick, qui s\u2019en inspirent pour pub\u00adli\u00ader leur c\u00e9l\u00e8bre arti\u00adcle dans \u201cNature\u201d en 1953.<br>Franklin, elle, pour\u00adsuit ses recherch\u00ades sur l\u2019ADN, puis sur les virus, mais ne re\u00e7oit ni prix Nobel ni recon\u00adnais\u00adsance publique de son vivant. Elle meurt pr\u00e9\u00admatur\u00e9\u00adment d\u2019un can\u00adcer \u00e0 37 ans, en 1958.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Un h\u00e9ritage sci\u00aden\u00adtifique et f\u00e9min\u00adiste<\/strong><br>Aujourd\u2019hui, la com\u00admu\u00adnaut\u00e9 sci\u00aden\u00adtifique recon\u00adna\u00eet enfin l\u2019apport fon\u00adda\u00admen\u00adtal de Ros\u00adalind Franklin. Son nom est asso\u00adci\u00e9 \u00e0 de nom\u00adbreux prix, lab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtoires et mis\u00adsions spa\u00adtiales (comme la sonde Exo\u00adMars \u201cRos\u00adalind Franklin\u201d). Elle incar\u00adne la rigueur, la pas\u00adsion et la t\u00e9nac\u00adit\u00e9, mais aus\u00adsi la n\u00e9ces\u00adsit\u00e9 de lut\u00adter pour la recon\u00adnais\u00adsance des femmes dans la sci\u00adence.<br>Son his\u00adtoire inspire des g\u00e9n\u00e9ra\u00adtions de jeunes chercheuses \u00e0 oser, \u00e0 per\u00ads\u00e9v\u00e9r\u00ader et \u00e0 revendi\u00adquer leur place dans les lab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtoires du monde entier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>T\u00e9moignages et hom\u00admages<\/strong><br>\u201cRos\u00adalind Franklin a ouvert la voie \u00e0 toutes les femmes sci\u00aden\u00adtifiques. Son exi\u00adgence et son courage sont un mod\u00ad\u00e8le pour nous toutes\u201d, con\u00adfie la biol\u00ado\u00adgiste Emmanuelle Char\u00adp\u00aden\u00adtier, prix Nobel de chimie.<br>Des doc\u00adu\u00admen\u00adtaires, des biogra\u00adphies et des pi\u00e8ces de th\u00e9\u00e2tre lui ren\u00addent aujourd\u2019hui hom\u00admage, con\u00adtribuant \u00e0 r\u00e9par\u00ader l\u2019injustice de l\u2019oubli.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Con\u00adclu\u00adsion<\/strong><br>Ros\u00adalind Franklin n\u2019a pas seule\u00adment con\u00adtribu\u00e9 \u00e0 la d\u00e9cou\u00adverte de l\u2019ADN : elle a prou\u00adv\u00e9 que la sci\u00adence n\u2019a pas de genre.
