Cette fresque his\u00adtorique ambitieuse explore non seule\u00adment la vie du c\u00e9l\u00e8bre inven\u00adteur, mais aus\u00adsi les d\u00e9buts de l\u2019\u00e8re \u00e9lec\u00adtrique et les con\u00adflits qui ont fa\u00e7on\u00adn\u00e9 le monde mod\u00aderne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le film s\u2019ou\u00advre sur Edi\u00adson, incar\u00adn\u00e9 par un Chris\u00adt\u00adian Bale m\u00e9con\u00adnaiss\u00adable, au cr\u00e9\u00adpus\u00adcule de sa car\u00adri\u00e8re. Vieil\u00adli, fatigu\u00e9, mais tou\u00adjours ani\u00adm\u00e9 par une flamme int\u00e9rieure inex\u00adtin\u00adguible, Edi\u00adson se bat pour main\u00adtenir sa per\u00adti\u00adnence dans un monde qui \u00e9volue rapi\u00adde\u00adment. Nolan utilise cette pr\u00e9misse pour tiss\u00ader une nar\u00adra\u00adtion com\u00adplexe qui oscille entre le pr\u00e9sent d\u2019Edi\u00adson et les moments cl\u00e9s de sa car\u00adri\u00e8re.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bale livre une per\u00adfor\u00admance magis\u00adtrale, cap\u00adturant \u00e0 la fois le g\u00e9nie et les failles d\u2019Edi\u00adson. Il nous mon\u00adtre un homme con\u00adsum\u00e9 par son tra\u00advail, capa\u00adble d\u2019\u00e9\u00adclairs de bril\u00adlance mais aus\u00adsi de moments de doute pro\u00adfond. La trans\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adtion physique de Bale est stup\u00e9\u00adfi\u00adante, le vieil\u00adlisse\u00adment \u00e9tant ren\u00addu de mani\u00e8re si con\u00adva\u00adin\u00adcante qu\u2019on en oublie l\u2019ac\u00adteur der\u00adri\u00e8re le per\u00adson\u00adnage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nolan, fid\u00e8le \u00e0 son style, joue avec la chronolo\u00adgie du r\u00e9c\u00adit. Le film alterne entre trois p\u00e9ri\u00adodes cl\u00e9s : les d\u00e9buts promet\u00adteurs d\u2019Edi\u00adson et l\u2019in\u00adven\u00adtion de l\u2019am\u00adpoule \u00e9lec\u00adtrique, la \u201cguerre des courants\u201d qui l\u2019op\u00adpose \u00e0 George West\u00ading\u00adhouse et Niko\u00adla Tes\u00adla, et ses derniers jours o\u00f9 il lutte pour laiss\u00ader un h\u00e9ritage durable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La recon\u00adsti\u00adtu\u00adtion his\u00adtorique est impec\u00adca\u00adble. Nolan et son \u00e9quipe ont recr\u00e9\u00e9 avec un souci du d\u00e9tail m\u00e9tic\u00aduleux le New York de la fin du 19e si\u00e8\u00adcle et du d\u00e9but du 20e. Les sc\u00e8nes mon\u00adtrant les pre\u00admi\u00e8res d\u00e9mon\u00adstra\u00adtions publiques de l\u2019\u00e9\u00adclairage \u00e9lec\u00adtrique sont par\u00adti\u00adc\u00aduli\u00e8re\u00adment sai\u00adsis\u00adsantes, cap\u00adturant l\u2019\u00e9mer\u00adveille\u00adment et la peur que cette nou\u00advelle tech\u00adnolo\u00adgie a pu sus\u00adciter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mais \u201cThe Last Light\u201d n\u2019est pas qu\u2019un sim\u00adple biopic. Nolan utilise l\u2019his\u00adtoire d\u2019Edi\u00adson comme une lentille pour explor\u00ader des th\u00e8mes plus larges : l\u2019in\u00adno\u00adva\u00adtion face \u00e0 la tra\u00addi\u00adtion, l\u2019\u00e9thique dans les affaires, le prix per\u00adson\u00adnel du g\u00e9nie. La \u201cguerre des courants\u201d est pr\u00e9sen\u00adt\u00e9e comme une m\u00e9taphore des con\u00adflits mod\u00adernes entre dif\u00adf\u00e9rentes visions du pro\u00adgr\u00e8s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le film n\u2019h\u00e9site pas \u00e0 mon\u00adtr\u00ader les aspects plus som\u00adbres de la per\u00adson\u00adnal\u00adit\u00e9 d\u2019Edi\u00adson, notam\u00adment sa rival\u00adit\u00e9 acharn\u00e9e avec Tes\u00adla (inter\u00adpr\u00e9t\u00e9 par un Rami Malek \u00e9nig\u00adma\u00adtique) et West\u00ading\u00adhouse (un Michael Shan\u00adnon imposant). Ces con\u00adflits sont pr\u00e9sen\u00adt\u00e9s avec nuance, Nolan refu\u00adsant de pein\u00addre Edi\u00adson sim\u00adple\u00adment comme un h\u00e9ros ou un vilain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La cin\u00e9\u00admatogra\u00adphie de Hoyte van Hoytema, col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adteur fr\u00e9quent de Nolan, est \u00e0 couper le souf\u00adfle. Les sc\u00e8nes noc\u00adturnes, \u00e9clair\u00e9es unique\u00adment par des lam\u00adpes \u00e0 incan\u00addes\u00adcence ou des arcs \u00e9lec\u00adtriques, cr\u00e9ent une atmo\u00adsph\u00e8re presque mys\u00adtique. Le con\u00adtraste entre l\u2019ob\u00adscu\u00adrit\u00e9 et la lumi\u00e8re devient un motif visuel puis\u00adsant tout au long du film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La bande sonore de Hans Zim\u00admer, autre col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adteur de longue date de Nolan, est \u00e0 la fois sub\u00adtile et puis\u00adsante. Elle m\u00eale habile\u00adment des sons \u00e9lec\u00adtron\u00adiques mod\u00adernes \u00e0 des instru\u00adments d\u2019\u00e9poque, cr\u00e9ant une ten\u00adsion sonore qui refl\u00e8te le con\u00adflit entre tra\u00addi\u00adtion et inno\u00adva\u00adtion au c\u0153ur du film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Last Light\u201d brille par\u00adti\u00adc\u00aduli\u00e8re\u00adment dans ses moments plus intimes. Les sc\u00e8nes entre Edi\u00adson et sa femme Mary (Emi\u00adly Blunt dans un r\u00f4le poignant) offrent un con\u00adtre\u00adpoint \u00e9mo\u00adtion\u00adnel aux grands enjeux his\u00adtoriques. Leur rela\u00adtion com\u00adplexe, mar\u00adqu\u00e9e par l\u2019ad\u00admi\u00adra\u00adtion mutuelle mais aus\u00adsi par les sac\u00adri\u00adfices impos\u00e9s par l\u2019am\u00adbi\u00adtion d\u2019Edi\u00adson, ajoute une pro\u00adfondeur humaine au r\u00e9c\u00adit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le film abor\u00adde \u00e9gale\u00adment des ques\u00adtions \u00e9thiques com\u00adplex\u00ades, notam\u00adment \u00e0 tra\u00advers le r\u00f4le d\u2019Edi\u00adson dans le d\u00e9veloppe\u00adment de la chaise \u00e9lec\u00adtrique. Ces s\u00e9quences, par\u00admi les plus som\u00adbres du film, mon\u00adtrent com\u00adment les inno\u00adva\u00adtions tech\u00adnologiques peu\u00advent avoir des con\u00ads\u00e9quences inat\u00adten\u00addues et par\u00adfois ter\u00adri\u00adfi\u00adantes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

C\u2019est une \u0153uvre ambitieuse qui utilise la vie d\u2019Edi\u00adson comme point de d\u00e9part pour explor\u00ader des ques\u00adtions fon\u00adda\u00admen\u00adtales sur l\u2019in\u00adno\u00adva\u00adtion, l\u2019am\u00adbi\u00adtion et le pro\u00adgr\u00e8s.
